Possible solution to the RAR problem

As promised I looked into the RAR problem on the MAC. After asking around I got a tip from Caesar Tjalbo. So far I've been using WINACE to package. Caesar has been using WINRAR and has had no complaints so far. So time for me to try something new. The next few postings will be made with WINRAR. Unfortunately I do not have a MAC (I'm using, so I can't test it myself. Dear MAC-users: Please be so kind to test one (or more) of the next few downloads and let me know if this solved the problem. regards, Scrooge

  • Mac problem solved! Just downloaded News & The Blues, and had no problem with the file at all. Many thanks!

  • Thank you Biscuit for testing! I do appologise for the things that didn't work so far. Let's hope the problem is solved for everyone.

In the mean time I owe you one! Just tell me which albums you want me to reload first.

  • No need for any apologies, it is very kind of you to be so considerate of us mac people! I'd love the Skip James as I've never heard him. Also curious about Howard Tate. But I would be grateful for whatever you can do. Perhaps the most popular downloads first would be best for all. Thanks again,

  • I Managed to re-load:
Skip James - complete 1931 recordings
    T-Bone Walker - Good Feelin'
T-Bone Walker - complete imperial recordings
    Howard Tate - Rediscovered
Elmore James - Best of the Fire Sessions

The moment I got more I'll be back.

  • repost of mac info by 'Steve Jobs' from STH

MacParDeluxe free download/nagware. Easiest to use. Make sure all the segements are in the folder and drop one or all onto the program, ( I suggest putting it in the dock).

UnRarX free download/ freeware. Not as easy to use, but if you have no idea what the password is, it will sometimes show in the comments section. When you unRar a file you must FIRST enter the password in its rather clumky interface. This is not the prettiest, but you need it:

For both MacParDeluxe and UnRarX, there are cases where one will work and the other one won't, sometimes even on two halves of the same RS upload for instance. (RAR is a proprietary closed format and both these tools are made from open source reverse engineering cracks so they won't always work.)

In general, Stuffit Expander should be your last resort, but it is as
far as I know the only way on the mac to unpack password protected zip files. The built-in mac unzipper will fail on password protected zip files.

Stuffit expander will also routinely report that archives are corrupt and/or passwords are wrong on many RARs. However, if people use the old style RARs with .r00 on the end and then rename them, it will at least tell you what you should rename the next file.

If you run into .ace files

For Oddball stuff like self extracting zips, which have a .exe on the
    end, there is:

    File Juicer

VLC Player will play any Audio format .wma, .ogg, m4a, .mpga, mp3 etc. (But no useful library functions and no burning functions).

    VLC- Freeware

    For converting .wma into .mp3:

EasyWMA (A little slow but then you can put it in iTunes).

    The OGG Plugin for iTunes:

(NOTE: The Ogg Plugin will allow you to play OGGs and convert them. If you try to use Ogg music files with a fullsize library your computer will slow to a crawl. You might just want to convert them, although trancoding lossy formats is a BAD IDEA. That having been said, I transcoded all the .wma and .ogg files I had because of my iPod).

Last bit of advice, get a web mail account (hotmail has too small a mailbox if you ever want something mailed to you)
Leave that address when you need help. You can totally invent info for webmail addresses so it can't be traced back to you.

All of the programs listed here are shareware/nagware; support independent software, pay your shareware fees.
